Upsells & cross-sells that lift AOV
Raising average order value is the cheapest growth you have. The ad cost is already paid, so extra spend per order is almost pure margin.
The trick is relevant offers at the right moment, not spammy add-ons. AI can map upsell and cross-sell pairs to your catalog and the best placements. Keep it genuinely helpful, because a pushy upsell costs trust.

You are a merchandising strategist optimizing AOV for a DTC store.
My products: [list or paste catalog] AOV now: [$] Margins by product if known: [list]
Do this using MY catalog only:
1. Map upsells (a bigger/better/bundle version) and cross-sells (a complementary product) for my top products. For each pair, say WHY it's relevant to the buyer.
2. Recommend WHERE to place each (product page, cart, post-purchase) and why that moment fits.
3. Suggest 2-3 bundles that raise AOV and feel like a deal, with a rationale.
4. Flag anything that would feel pushy or irrelevant, and say what to avoid.
Do not invent margin numbers; if I didn't give them, note where they'd matter.
Output: upsell/cross-sell map + placements + bundle ideas.
Or do it in 4 steps
- Cross-sell complements on the product page and cart. "Goes well with" items that truly complete the purchase (the case for the phone, the refill for the device). Relevance is everything. A random add-on is ignored.
- Upsell a better or bigger version at decision time. A larger size, a bundle, or a premium tier, offered where they're already choosing. "Save 15% with the 3-pack" converts because it's a clear deal at the right moment.
- Use the post-purchase moment. A one-click upsell after they've bought, before the thank-you page, adds margin with zero risk to the original order. They've already decided to trust you.
- Keep it helpful, capped, and relevant. One or two well-chosen offers, not a wall of add-ons. A pushy or irrelevant upsell annoys buyers and can lose the whole cart. Frame it as "complete your kit", not "buy more".
Worked example (labeled): AOV $50. Add a cart cross-sell ("add the $12 refill") taken by 25% of buyers, and a post-purchase one-click upsell ($15 add-on) taken by 15%.
Blended, that can lift AOV toward $57-58, a 15%+ increase in revenue per order with no extra ad spend. Model your own take rates from real data before assuming.
Review each offer's take rate; drop the ones ignored and double down on what buyers actually add.
