Best SEO tools for e-commerce (2026)
You don't need five subscriptions. A free stack covers your first months; add ONE paid suite when you actually hit its limits. Prices below were checked in July 2026 on the tools' own pricing pages, and they shift, so re-verify before you buy.
Set up your free stack in 30 minutes
- Google Search Console (search.google.com/search-console), ~10 min. Verify your domain with a DNS record. The only place to see the queries you already rank for and your indexing issues; AI Overviews traffic is counted inside the same Search performance report.
- Bing Webmaster Tools (bing.com/webmasters), ~5 min. Use "Import from Google Search Console" — one click, no separate verification. Covers Bing plus the AI assistants that lean on Bing's index.
- Ahrefs free tools, ~10 min. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (ahrefs.com/webmaster-tools) gives free backlink data and a scheduled site audit for your own verified site; the Free Keyword Generator (ahrefs.com/keyword-generator) handles keyword ideas without an account.
- One AI chatbot, ~5 min. ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini is your analysis layer: paste Search Console exports and ask for intent tags, clusters and title rewrites.
Done = both consoles verified, the Ahrefs audit scheduled, a chatbot ready. This stack carries you until you need competitor data.
The pro stack: pick ONE suite
The overlap between suites isn't worth double the cost. Entry tiers, checked July 2026 on each pricing page:
| Suite | Entry price (monthly billing) | Best if |
|---|
| Ahrefs | Starter $29/mo; Lite $129/mo | backlinks and competitor gap analysis matter most |
| Semrush | Pro $139.95/mo | one team runs SEO, ads and content together |
| Moz Pro | Starter $49/mo; Standard $99/mo | you want the cheapest full suite as a solo marketer |
Specialists, only once you crawl or publish weekly: Screaming Frog (free up to 500 URLs; $279/year for unlimited crawls, JS rendering and scheduling, at screamingfrog.co.uk) for technical audits, and content-scoring tools like Surfer or Clearscope for teams publishing weekly (their tiers change often, so check current pricing before deciding).
One prompt: let AI pick your stack
🤖 AI prompt — paste into ChatGPT / Claude
You are an SEO tooling consultant for an ecommerce store.
Monthly tool budget: [$X]
Store size: [number of products and monthly sessions]
Market: [country + language]
Biggest pain right now: [e.g. I do not know what competitors rank for]
Do this:
1. Open these pricing pages in your browser and read the CURRENT entry-tier prices: ahrefs.com/pricing, semrush.com/pricing, moz.com/products/pro/pricing. Do not guess or estimate any price — every figure must come from a page you opened or a source you can cite next to it. If you cannot browse, leave every price cell blank and tell me to read those three pages myself.
2. Compare three options for MY budget, size and market: Ahrefs, Semrush, and a free-only stack (Google Search Console + Bing Webmaster Tools + Ahrefs Webmaster Tools + free keyword tools).
3. Recommend exactly one option, and say what I give up versus the next tier up.
Output ONE markdown table — Option | Current entry price | What I get | What I give up — then a 3-sentence recommendation.
My rule: start free, add one paid suite when you outgrow it, add a specialist only when you'd use it weekly. Re-check pricing yearly, and treat any price table older than a year, including this one, as stale.
