Segment your list so every send is relevant
A blast to everyone erodes engagement and deliverability. AI can define the segments and draft the first campaign for each; you paste your real customer counts, because AI can't see your store data.
Fastest path: one prompt, end to end
🤖 AI prompt — paste into ChatGPT / Claude
You are a CRM strategist building segments in Klaviyo for a DTC store.
Paste my customer counts by recency / frequency / monetary if I have them:
total subscribers [#], purchased in last 30/60/90 days [#], 2+ orders [#],
subscribed but no purchase yet [#], by top category [#], top-10% spenders [#].
AOV: [$]
Using MY numbers only:
1. Define 5 core segments with the EXACT Klaviyo condition-builder logic for each (name the group -- "What someone has done (or not done)" or "Properties about someone" -- the metric, the operator, and the timeframe, e.g. "What someone has done > Placed Order zero times over all time AND What someone has done > Opened Email at least once in the last 30 days").
2. For each, give the first campaign to send and why it fits that group.
3. Add a simple RFM tier (recency/frequency/monetary, 1-3 each) mapping the counts I gave into first campaigns.
Do not guess or estimate any number. Every figure must come from a count I gave you or a source you can cite, and you must name the source next to it. If a count is missing, list it and ask me for it, do not assume one. If you can't browse, still build from my numbers and tell me which count to supply.
Output: a segment table (name | Klaviyo condition logic | first campaign) + an RFM tier note.
Or do it in 5 steps
Build each in Klaviyo under Lists & Segments > Create List / Segment > Segment, then set the Definition with these exact clicks:
- Engaged (30/60/90 day): group What someone has done (or not done) > metric Opened Email > at least once > in the last 30 days. Duplicate the segment twice and swap 30 for 60 and 90. This is your safe-to-send core, mail it most, it protects deliverability.
- VIP: What someone has done > Placed Order > at least 2 times > over all time; or click + OR and add Properties about someone > Historic Customer Lifetime Value is at least [your top-10% threshold]. Give them early access and perks, not the same discount everyone gets.
- At-risk: two rows joined with AND > Placed Order at least once over all time, AND Opened Email zero times in the last 60 days (stretch to 90). Target with a winback before they're dead weight.
- Subscribed, never purchased: Placed Order zero times over all time, AND If someone is or is not in a list > is in > your Newsletter list. Needs education and social proof, not another 10% code.
- Category interest: Viewed Product OR Placed Order where the property Item Categories (or Collection) equals [line]. Send category-relevant launches only, this is where relevance pays off.
Worked example (labeled RFM):
| Score (R-F-M) | Who they are | First campaign |
|---|
| 3-3-3 | Recent, frequent, high spend (VIP) | Early access to the next launch |
| 1-3-3 | Lapsed big spender | Priority winback with a real reason to return |
| 3-1-1 | Fresh one-time buyer | Nurture to a second order (bundle / replenish) |
Score each customer 1-3 on Recency, Frequency, and Monetary, sort your list into these cells before your next campaign, and mail the message that fits the cell.
Segment membership updates automatically in Klaviyo; review the definitions quarterly.
