One GEO plan doesn't fit all four engines
AI does the diagnosis here: ask each engine the same buyer question and it shows you, live, which sources it leans on. What it cannot do is the work each one rewards. That differs enough by engine that you should pick one and act, not spread thin.
Fastest path: one prompt, end to end
Run this in all four engines and compare who names you today:
🤖 AI prompt — paste into ChatGPT / Claude
You are auditing AI-answer visibility. I sell [PRODUCT/CATEGORY]. Web search ON.
1. Ask these 3 buyer questions: [Q1], [Q2], [Q3].
2. For each, record ONLY what actually appeared: is [MY BRAND] named? Which domains did you cite (with links)? What TYPE are they (Reddit / YouTube / review site / news / my own site)?
3. Output ONE table: Question | [MY BRAND] named? | Domains cited | Domain types.
Do not guess or invent domains. Record only what you genuinely cited this session. If you cannot browse, say so and stop.
Run it in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and Gemini separately. The differences ARE your playbook.
The four engines at a glance
| Engine | What it leans on | What moves the needle | First action |
|---|
| ChatGPT | Web search built on Bing's index; encyclopedic sources | Clear, neutral "reference" writing with direct answers, quotes, named stats up front | Rewrite one flagship page in that tone |
| Perplexity | Real-time search, heavy on Reddit and YouTube; favors very recent posts | Genuine presence in category subreddits plus real video | Answer 3 real questions in a relevant subreddit this week |
| Google AI Overviews / AI Mode | Same ranking systems as classic Search, reaching well beyond page one | Technical SEO, schema, snippet-style formatting | Fix schema and snippet formatting on one page |
| Gemini | Google's own ecosystem: Search plus YouTube and Maps | Captioned, schema-marked YouTube; a complete Google Business Profile | Post one captioned YouTube video for a top buyer question |
Or do it in 3 steps
- Run the prompt; see which engine your buyers actually use and where you are weakest.
- Pick the ONE engine that matters most to your category and do its "first action" this week. Do not spread across four.
- Re-run the prompt in a month. Done = your "named? yes" count on that one engine went up.
The one number worth knowing (AI Overviews)
Google says AI Overviews use the same ranking systems as Search. But the overlap with the traditional top 10 has fallen sharply, from about 76% of citations in July 2025 to around 38% now (Ahrefs, 863K SERPs).
YouTube is now the single most-cited domain, including for pages that do not rank at all. Keep doing SEO, but do not assume a top-10 rank is the whole game.
Re-check quarterly. The source mix shifts monthly.
