Best tools for operations & fulfillment
You don't need an ops suite, you need one tool per job you actually feel pain in: shipping labels, helpdesk, inventory, returns.
AI can pull current pricing into a job-by-job comparison. You confirm the live numbers on each vendor's page, because ops-tool pricing and free tiers change often.

My biggest pain right now: [shipping labels / support volume / stockouts / returns]
Orders/month: [#] Budget: [bootstrapped / has budget]
Do this:
1. Browse the CURRENT pricing pages for one tool per job and read the real 2026 free tiers + entry prices (do not rely on memory): shipping (Shopify Shipping or ShipStation), helpdesk (Shopify Inbox or Gorgias), inventory (native or an inventory app), returns (Shopify native or Loop/Returnly).
2. Return ONE table: Job | Tool | Free/native? | Entry price | When it's worth it.
3. Recommend a minimal stack for MY pain point and order volume, and flag what I can defer.
If a price won't load, mark "check pricing page", don't guess.

Or do it in 4 steps
- Shipping/labels first, it's the daily grind. Shopify Shipping (built in) or ShipStation buys discounted rates and batch label printing. This usually saves the most time and money per order, so it's the first upgrade for most stores.
- Helpdesk when support scatters. Start with Shopify Inbox or a shared inbox; move to an order-integrated helpdesk (Gorgias) when ticket volume or a support hire justifies it (see helpdesk-setup).
- Inventory tool when SKUs or channels multiply. Native Shopify inventory is fine for one store; add an inventory app when you sell across channels or need forecasting/reorder alerts (see inventory-planning).
- Returns tool when returns get frequent. A returns portal (Loop, Returnly, or Shopify's native returns) automates the flow and pushes exchanges over refunds. Worth it once return volume makes manual handling painful (see returns-policy).
Worked example (labeled): a new Shopify store at low volume needs almost nothing beyond native: Shopify Shipping for labels, Shopify Inbox for support, native inventory and returns, at near-zero added cost.
Add ShipStation when label volume grows, Gorgias when tickets do, a returns app when returns do. Buy each tool the day the bottleneck is real, not before.
The channel now also covers automation and daily visibility (ops-automation, daily-ops-dashboard) plus AI in support (ai-customer-support): start with your platform's native automations and your helpdesk's built-in AI features before adding any standalone tool.
Re-check the stack quarterly; add a tool only when a specific bottleneck, not a feature list, forces it.
