Earn backlinks with digital PR, the AI-native way
Backlinks are still one of Google's strongest ranking signals. The shortcuts of a decade ago (mass guest posts, directory submissions, paid link networks) are exactly what its spam systems now discount or penalize.
The 2026 play is digital PR: build one thing worth citing, then let AI do the tedious parts (prospect research and personalized pitches) while you supply the asset and make the judgment calls. In Editorial.link's 2025 survey of 518 SEOs, 48.6% rated digital PR the most effective link-building tactic; guest posting got 16%.

🤖 AI prompt — paste into ChatGPT / Claude
You are a digital PR outreach specialist for an ecommerce brand.
My product and asset: [one sentence on the product, plus the linkable asset — original data, study, free tool, or guide]
My site: [URL]
Target sites: [paste 10 sites, blogs, or publications you want links from]
Do this:
1. Open each target site in your browser and read its 2-3 most recent posts. Note the author, their beat, and their tone. Do NOT skip this — every pitch must reference something the site actually published.
2. For each target, write a distinct 90-120 word pitch email: a subject line under 50 characters, one line naming their recent post by title, two lines on why my asset fits their audience, and one clear ask (a link or coverage). No two pitches may share a sentence.
3. Return ONE markdown table: Site | Contact/author | Recent post referenced | Subject line | Pitch | Best send day.
Do not guess or invent anything. Every post title and author name must come from a page you actually opened — put the URL next to it. If you cannot browse, leave those columns blank and ask me to paste each site's latest post titles, then draft from what I give you.
If your chatbot can't browse, it will happily invent "recent posts". Never send a pitch that references an article you haven't confirmed exists.
Or do it in 5 steps
- Find a linkable angle. Publications link to three things: original data, a real study, or a genuinely useful free tool. Feed AI what only you have: "Here's my store's anonymized order/search/return data: [paste]. List 10 headline-worthy stats or study angles a trade blog would cite." Pick the one nobody else can publish.
- Build the asset page. One URL: the headline stat in the H1, 3-5 takeaways with simple charts, methodology and sample size at the bottom, plus a "cite as" line. No email gate. Gated data earns no links.
- Prospect 30 targets. Run 2-3 competitors through Ahrefs' free backlink checker (ahrefs.com/backlink-checker) to see their top backlinks. Note every site that linked to their content, then add niche publications that run data roundups. Qualify by signals (organic traffic, original reporting, an actual editorial team), not just a domain-rating number. Stop at 30: thirty researched targets beat 300 scraped ones.
- Draft pitches with AI. The prompt above writes one distinct pitch per target, anchored to something each site really published. Read every pitch before sending. Your name is on it, not the AI's.
- Send and track. A simple sheet: Site | Contact | Sent | Replied | Link live. One follow-up after 4-5 days, then stop. As a working goal (not an industry benchmark): 3-5 live editorial links from 30 researched pitches is a successful campaign. A handful of relevant links beats hundreds of junk ones.
Done looks like: asset live, 30 personalized pitches sent, replies tracked in one sheet, and a few real publications linking to a page you own.
My rule: if the only way to get the link is to pay for it or write it yourself on someone else's blog, it's not authority. It's rent.
Cadence: ship one new linkable asset per quarter and re-run the same 5 steps.
