Find the gap: mine competitors' negative reviews
Your competitors' 1- and 2-star reviews are a free list of unmet needs, written by the exact customers you both want.
Mine the recurring complaints and cluster them into themes. Each theme becomes a differentiation angle you can build your product page and positioning around.

You are a customer-insight analyst. Work only from real review text I give you or that you can read. Do not invent quotes or counts.
My product / niche: [e.g. standing desks]
Competitor review sources: [paste 1-2 star reviews, or give me the URLs to read]
Do this:
1. Read the 1-2 star reviews and extract every distinct complaint as a short phrase.
2. Cluster the complaints into 4-6 themes (e.g. 'wobbly at height', 'slow support', 'confusing assembly'). For each theme give a rough count and 1-2 verbatim quotes.
3. Rank themes by how often they recur AND how fixable they are for a new entrant.
4. For the top 3 themes, write the differentiation angle and the exact product-page line I'd use to claim it.
If you cannot read a source, tell me and I'll paste the reviews. Never fabricate a review or a number.
Output: complaint themes (with counts + quotes) + top 3 differentiation angles + product-page lines.
Or do it in 4 steps
- Go straight to the 1- and 2-star reviews. Sort competitor reviews low-first on Amazon, their store, Trustpilot, or Reddit threads. Five-star reviews tell you what's table-stakes. The angry ones tell you what's broken and unclaimed.
- Extract complaints as phrases, not stars. Pull the actual pain ('screen wobbles when raised', 'took 3 days to reply') rather than the rating. One review often hides two complaints, so capture both.
- Cluster into themes and count. Group the phrases. A complaint that shows up 20 times across three competitors is a market-wide gap, not one bad batch. Frequency plus fixability is what makes a theme worth chasing.
- Turn each theme into a claim. A recurring 'wobbles at full height' becomes your headline: 'Rock-solid at every height, we tested it.' The complaint you can honestly beat becomes your positioning, not a feature buried on page two.
Worked example (labeled): standing desks.
Mining 1-2 star reviews across three rivals, AI clusters 80 complaints into: wobble at height (31), slow support (22), confusing assembly (15), noisy motor (12).
Wobble is both the most common and the most fixable, so it becomes the product-page headline and the demo video, while 'assembled in 10 minutes' answers theme three. You didn't guess your differentiation. Your competitors' worst reviews handed it to you.
Mine the anger, cluster it, and claim the top gap out loud; the complaint you can beat is your positioning.
