Own a topic, don't chase random keywords
Scattered posts compete with each other and rank for nothing. A pillar-and-cluster map makes your content compound: one authoritative pillar page owns a subject, and eight cluster articles each answer a buyer question and link back to it.
AI can build that map from your keyword list, but it has no live search data. You confirm the real volumes in a keyword tool (start from the keyword-research note, the upstream step).

You are a content strategist for a DTC ecommerce brand.
Product / category: [one line]
My keyword research (paste the list with volumes if you have it): [paste]
Do this:
1. Propose ONE pillar topic broad enough to own but specific to my category, with its primary keyword.
2. Map 8 cluster articles under it. For each: target keyword, search intent (informational / commercial / transactional), buyer-journey stage, and exactly how it links back to the pillar.
3. If I gave volumes, sort clusters by opportunity (volume x intent / difficulty). If I didn't, open a keyword tool (Ahrefs' free Keyword Generator at ahrefs.com/keyword-generator, or Google Keyword Planner at ads.google.com) and read the real monthly volumes.
Do not guess or estimate any number. Every volume must come from a tool you opened; put the source next to it. If you cannot browse, leave the volume column blank and tell me which tool to open to fill it.
Output: pillar row + 8 cluster rows as one table (Article | Keyword | Intent | Stage | Links to pillar how).
Or do it in 5 steps
- Pick one pillar you can genuinely own — broad enough for 8+ sub-topics, specific enough to rank ("merino wool care", not "clothing"). If you can't picture eight honest articles under it, it's too narrow; if you can't out-expert the current top result, it's too broad.
- Pull cluster keywords from your keyword research. Start there — it's the upstream note. Group the buyer questions that ladder up to the pillar, and map each to a journey stage: awareness (education), consideration (comparisons, "vs", alternatives), decision (use-case, pricing, objections).
- Confirm real volumes in Ahrefs' free Keyword Generator (100+ ideas with monthly volume) or Google Keyword Planner. Kill zero-volume ideas; keep the winnable, intent-rich ones. Never trust an AI-invented volume.
- Write the pillar as the definitive overview, then each cluster deep on one sub-topic. Every cluster links up to the pillar; the pillar links down to each — hub and spoke. That internal linking is the signal that tells search engines you own the subject.
- Sequence by opportunity. Publish the highest volume-x-intent-÷-difficulty cluster first so early wins fund the rest, and give every informational page one clear next step toward a commercial page.
Worked example (labeled): pillar "How to care for merino wool" → clusters "can you machine wash merino", "merino wool pilling fix", "how often to wash merino", "does merino shrink", "storing merino for summer" — each a real buyer question, each linking to the pillar, and the pillar linking back to each.
Eight of these plus the pillar is a topic you can credibly own in a quarter, versus eight unrelated posts that rank for nothing.
Re-map quarterly as you publish and as keyword opportunities shift.
