Community strategy: build one only when it earns its keep
AI can pressure-test whether you even need a community and draft your purpose, first ritual, and success metric in minutes. What it can't do is know your real weekly capacity or host the room, that takes you and a real platform (Discord, Circle, a Facebook Group).
Fastest path: one prompt, end to end
🤖 AI prompt — paste into ChatGPT / Claude
You are a DTC community strategist. My brand: [brand + what I sell]. My best customers: [who they are and how they behave]. Time I can commit weekly: [hours]. Budget: [$/month].
1. First decide if a community even makes sense. If my customers are one-time and transactional with no reason to talk to each other, say so plainly and tell me to stop here.
2. If it makes sense, recommend ONE model from: Discord (discord.com), Circle (circle.so), Facebook Group (facebook.com/groups), Skool (skool.com), or a forum like Discourse (discourse.org). Match the model to my purpose and capacity, not the trend.
3. Give honest trade-offs for each candidate: cost, who owns the data, and how much weekly effort it demands.
4. Define ONE purpose sentence, ONE weekly ritual I can sustain for 3 months, and ONE success metric.
Output exactly one markdown table with columns: Option | Best when | Monthly cost | Honest downside. Then 'My pick and why' in 3 sentences, then a 'Purpose / Ritual / Metric' block.
Do not guess or estimate any number. Every price must come from the pricing page you actually opened, and name the source next to it. If you cannot browse, leave the cost column blank and tell me which page to check.
Or do it in 5 steps
- Write the one-sentence purpose first: who is in the room and what they get from each other. If you can't finish that sentence, you don't have a community yet, you have an audience.
- Pick the success metric before the tool. Usually repeat-purchase rate of members vs non-members, or support tickets deflected. Write down the target.
- Define one ritual you can run every single week for 3 months without fail (a live Q&A, a weekly 'show us what you made' thread).
- Only now choose the platform. Match the model to the purpose: a free chat layer (Discord, free to run) for reach, or a paid structured space (Circle from $89/mo, per circle.so/pricing) once you are monetising.
- Add a 'community member' segment in your analytics or CRM so the retention lift is measurable from day one.
Done looks like: a purpose sentence, a weekly ritual on the calendar, and a tracked segment, all in place before a single invite goes out.
Worked example (illustrative math)
Community-engaged customers show 29-56% higher purchase frequency than non-members (tyb.xyz, 2026 retention guide). Put honest numbers on it, using a mid-range +40% lift on repeat rate:
| Group | Customers | Repeat rate | AOV | Repeat revenue / cycle |
|---|
| Non-members | 1,000 | 20% | $60 | $12,000 |
| Members | 1,000 | 28% | $60 | $16,800 |
That is +$4,800 per cycle from the same customers, the number that justifies the time before you spend it. Swap in your own AOV and repeat rate.
Re-check the purpose and metric each quarter.
