Best Practice
📣 Earn the off-site mentions AI actually trusts
Ask AI engines your category buying questions, note which domains they actually cite, then earn your way onto those exact sites — the off-site mentions AI trusts now move citation odds more than backlinks.
🎯 Why it matters
AI engines cross-reference what the rest of the web says about you, and brand mentions now correlate with AI citations far more strongly than backlinks. This shows you how to find the exact domains an engine already trusts and earn placement there.
💬 My take
Earn placement on the exact domains AI already cites
AI does the reconnaissance here: ask an engine your category's buying questions and it will list, in the open, which sites it trusts enough to cite. What it cannot do is get you onto those sites. That is real outreach, a genuine community answer, or a review you actually earn.
Fastest path: one prompt, end to end
Run this in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode separately (their sources barely overlap):
🤖 AI prompt — paste into ChatGPT / Claude
You are a GEO researcher. I sell [PRODUCT/CATEGORY] to [BUYER].
1. List the 8 buying questions this buyer would actually type before choosing (e.g. "best [category] for [use case]", "[competitor] alternatives", "is [product type] worth it").
2. Answer each with web search ON, and for each answer record ONLY the domains you actually cited. Do not invent or pad the list.
3. Output ONE markdown table: Buyer question | Domains cited | Is [MY BRAND] mentioned? (yes/no) | Domain type (review site / listicle / Reddit / news / forum / other).
4. Then list the top 10 domains by how often they appeared. These are my placement targets.
Do not guess or estimate. Every domain must be one you genuinely cited in this session. If you cannot browse, say so and stop rather than inventing domains. Record only what actually appeared.
Or do it in 6 steps
- Run the prompt on each engine; keep only domains that truly appeared. That ranked list is your target set.
- Sort targets into three plays: review/comparison sites (pitch to be listed or reviewed), listicles ("best X" roundups, pitch the author), and community (Reddit, forums, Q&A).
- For review sites and listicles, send a short, specific pitch: what you are, who you are for, one number that makes you worth adding.
- For Reddit and forums, answer real questions as yourself. Reddit is Perplexity's single most-cited source, but its citation share is volatile: one tracker saw ChatGPT's Reddit share swing from about 60% to 10% and back within weeks, so treat it as ongoing, not a one-off. No sock-puppets, no astroturfing: it gets penalized by the community and the platform, and can become its own PR problem.
- Make your core facts (founding year, founders, HQ, pricing) identical word for word across your site, Wikipedia, Crunchbase, and review platforms. One mismatch lowers an engine's confidence you are a single entity.
- Re-run the prompt monthly and watch the "mentioned? yes" count climb. Done = you appear on 3 or more of your top-10 target domains.
What "brand mentions beat backlinks" looks like (example benchmark)
One 2025 analysis found brand mentions correlate with Google AI Overview citations at 0.664, versus 0.218 for traditional backlinks (Omnibound GEO statistics). Read plainly: an unlinked mention on a trusted domain can move your citation odds more than a link does, so chase being talked about, not just linked.
Re-run monthly.
⚖️ Do & Don't
Do
- Show up genuinely in category-relevant subreddits, answering real questions — Reddit is Perplexity's single most-cited source and a top-five source for ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
- Pursue unlinked mentions as seriously as backlinks — press coverage, podcast spots, and trade-press quotes now correlate more strongly with AI citation than links do.
- Keep your brand's core facts (founding year, founders, HQ, pricing) identical, word for word, across your own site, Wikipedia, Crunchbase, and review platforms.
- Pursue a Wikipedia page once you have real independent coverage to support it — not required for Knowledge Graph inclusion, but it substantially raises citation odds.
Avoid
- Don't treat a Reddit or PR win as permanent — citation share for any one source can crash and rebound within weeks as engines retune, so keep earning mentions continuously.
- Don't self-promote in Reddit threads — obvious astroturfing gets penalized by the community and the platform alike, and can turn into a PR problem of its own.
- Don't leave inconsistent facts uncorrected across directories and profiles — a mismatched founding date or address is enough to undercut entity trust.
- Don't chase viral attention without a plan for the scrutiny that follows — sudden fame invites lawsuits, fact-checking, and backlash that a shakier brand story can't survive.
💡 Quick tips
- Run a monthly search for your brand name plus "reddit" and read what's actually being said — it's a large share of what AI engines are reading about you too.
- Audit your own core facts (name, founding year, HQ, key numbers) across your top 10 off-site listings once a quarter.
🏢 Brand in focus
Brand$74M (2019) to $750M (2023) in Quencher revenue, driven by earned media
PR Week / CNBC · Why it fits: Stanley's rise ran almost entirely on off-site mentions — a mom-blogger's bulk order, then a single TikTok of a Stanley cup surviving a car fire (84M+ views) turned into a brand response that added 32M+ more views, all without a single ad. That kind of earned, cross-platform mention volume is exactly what AI engines now weigh as a trust signal. Did well: the brand's own social team stitched the viral video and offered a replacement car within 48 hours, turning a random user post into an authentic, widely covered brand moment. Watch-out: 2024 lawsuits over lead in the cup's sealing pellet, plus visible "Stanley mom" backlash and meme fatigue, show how fast the same off-site attention that builds authority can turn into the negative mentions an AI system also reads.
